Frequently Asked Questions

What are SAP & SBEM Calculations?
They are the governments approved methodology for calculating the energy performance of buildings. It is used to demonstrate compliance with Building Regulations Part L requirements and to produce Energy Performance Certificates for new buildings.

The score is based on factors such as insulation, air tightness, heating systems, ventilation and lighting. Renewable technologies such as solar power are also taken into account.

At what stage are SAP/SBEM calculation carried out?
SAP/SBEM calculations should ideally be undertaken at design stage. Sometimes changes in the original design of a building are needed to achieve a ‘pass’ and it is obviously better to find this out as early as possible.

If you have already started on-site however, don’t panic, we can often provide practical advice on specification changes that will provide the required pass.
